Dr. Richard A. Williams 75, Indianapolis, passed away October 27, 2009. Dr. Williams was the former Chair of the Department of Theatre. During his 30 years of service he directed over 150 theatrical productions, started the annual dinner theatre production, and led many performance tours to the east coast, west coast and Great Britain. Under his leadership the department claims many firsts including the world premiers of You Can't Go Home Again, Airwaves, and One Voice; Indianapolis premier of Grapes of Wrath; first non-professional productions in Indianapolis of 1776 and Children of a Lesser God. He is survived by spouse, Muriel Williams, daughter, Kathryn Ransburg and sons, Richard Williams and Douglas Williams.
Dr. Williams was very proud of his production of Hamlet in 1969 which was acclaimed by Indianapolis News Critic, Charles Staff : "Colleges seldom undertake a production of Hamlet and for Director Williams to have brought it off with such a measure of success is just short of a mystery. Eckert's portrayal of Hamlet was the finest single collegiate performance this writer has seen in roughly 15 years of professional attendance." Doc was teacher, mentor, and friend to hundreds of students.
The Department of Theatre dedicates the 2009-2010 season to Dr. William’s memory.
Theatre Alum? Tell us what you're doing now.
Changed your address? Help us update our records.
The Department of Theatre maintains an email listserv for Theatre alums. Recent grads will find this very familiar--it is the same kind of listserv as the one for Theatre students. We hope that this list will enable the department to communicate with alums about news and upcoming events with greater immediacy than postcards (or word of mouth). This list is also a forum for alumni to reconnect with each other and to announce personal news and upcoming events. We anticipate that the traffic on this list will be very minimal and sporadic. We'll announce our upcoming performances, any special alumni events (such as the Graduates of the Heart Dinner Theatre performance), and so on. I hope that alumni will announce any upcoming productions with which they are involved or any other personal news of interest. Otherwise, we discourage using the list as a forum for selling your used Honda Civic or promoting your pyramid scheme. To be added to the Alumni listserv, email Brad Wright at bwright@uindy.edu .

"I spent several years away from the theatre right after graduation working far too much and missing the stage every waking moment. But now, I'm happy to say, my friends don't see me for an entirely different reason. So for everyone who's gotten my silly answering machine: I'm not dead, just busy down at the theatre as always, but you can leave a message with my cat Ludwig. If you're talking a card party, I'm there, but I may be a little late. I think I've got a show that night.
And I realize I've never said a proper thank you to Jim Ream. Since most of what I do is backstage, I'd never have had a clue if he hadn't taken the time (and MUCH patience) to show me how."
